Brief History of CIAG

The Central Luzon State University International Alumni Group (CIAG) has a brief but unique history.  Its predecessor, the Organizing Committee was created by Dr. Rodolfo C. Undan in February 2002, who was then starting  his fourth year of his almost 8 ½ years CLSU presidency.

The Organizing Committee was mandated to encourage a more active and fuller participation by the alumni abroad, and in partnership with the CLSU administration, raise funds for the CLSU Centennial Fund. The Organizing Committee also spearheaded five annual international alumni homecoming (except in 2003 due to the Iraq War and SARS) prior to the centennial celebrations in April 2007.  It also held three alumni reunions in the United States: two in Las Vegas, on September 18, 2004 and September 24, 2005.  The third alumni reunion in the USA was recently held in Vallejo, CA on July 19, 2008.

The original Organizing Committee in 2002 with some additions later in the year was led by Loretta Santiago Malonzo as Chairperson and Ray Peralta as Vice Chairperson and other officers namely: Norma Bonzato Viray, Secretary-Treasurer, Floro Gutierrez and Digna Malong-Cielo, Press Relation Officers., Romeo Castro and Johnny Raniel, Business Managers, and Robert Cabalsi, Auditor.  Advisers were: Juanito and Julia Magno Campos, Marciano Estioko, Jr., and Val Pascual.

During the 2004 reunion in Las Vegas Cornelio Binoya Jr. proposed to form an association called CAFI (CLSU Alumni, Former Faculty/Staff, and Friends, Inc.).  He was elected President and Sid Galace was elected Vice President.  CAFI was meant to complement the Organizing Committee but its specific relationship with the latter was not perfectly clear.

In April, 2007, as everyone knows, CLSU grandly celebrated its centennial.  The Organizing Committee along with CAFI led a big delegation to participate in the celebrations.  Many alumni and dignitaries from around the world also attended.

After a lull of almost a year, the Organizing Committee, aware that its five-year mandate was over, consulted with the current CLSU President, Dr. Ruben C. Sevilleja for its role, if any.  Dr. Sevilleja gave the go signal to continue on so on February 2, 2008, the Organizing Committee held a meeting, re-organized and adopted the name CIAG  which also allows membership from former faculty and staff, and CLSU friends.  In that meeting, the need for more regional participation from across the United States and Canada was emphasized and elected:

Val Pascual, President, Rodrigo Dioso Jr., 1st Vice President and the following Regional Vice Presidents:

Canada         - Marietta A. Solano
East Coast    - Gerry Mamaclay
Hawaii           - Jesse Guirao
Las Vegas     - DG Elegado & Lilia D. Lopez
Los Angeles  - Fiorello Abenes &  Cornelio Binoya, Jr.
San Diego     - Del Rosario
Pacific NW/Intermountain – Gerry Galinato

Also elected were Floro Gutierrez, Secretary; Norma B. Viray, Treasurer; Ray Peralta, Auditor; Loretta S. Malonzo, PRO; and Bart Cinense, Business Manager.

Elected Advisers were: Edison and Nenita Cabacungan, Belgrano Cajigal, Juanito and Julia Campos, Marciano Estioko, Jr. and Artemio and Lulu Rodriguez.  The officers were inducted into office with a dinner and dance on July 19, 2008 in Vallejo, CA with former CLSU president Dr. Undan as guest speaker and inducting officer.

The Constitution and By-Laws of CIAG was originally drafted by the undersigned on May 19, 2008.  During summer and early fall the Constitution and By-Laws Committe revised it a few times until its final form was approved on November 15, 2008.  The Committe includes: Rodrigo Dioso, Jr as Chairman and Ed Cabacungan, Gerry Galinato, Gerry Mamaclay as members, and Floro Gutierrez as Coordinator.  There were others who offered helpful suggestions, to wit, Rob Bugawan, Romy Castro, Mar Estioko, Val Pascual, Rey Peralta, Johnny Raniel, and the final editing was done by Dr. Belgrano Cajigal, one of the Advisers.
